Candyfloss

Candyfloss is a brilliant book, including different mixtures of feelings, worried, excited, devastated and pleased.

Characters:

  • Flora (Floss)
  • Her mum
  • Her dad
  • Steve
  • Tiger
  • Rose
  • Billy the chip
  • Old Ron
  • Miss Davis
  • Saul
  • The fair helpers
Candyfloss has to be one of my favourite books I've read! Floss' mum and dad split up  a long time ago, she lives with her mum on week-days and her dad at the week-end.  It starts off happy and exciting for Floss, because it's her birthday.  She gets a t-shirt with a koala in the middle, a new pair of trainers and a toy kangaroo with a baby in her pouch.  Then she finds out what should have been good news but to Floss  it was bad. Steve got a promotion at work to go and work in Sydney and he accepted it so the whole family had to move there in one month.

She gets a second birthday at her dad's cafe. The three regular customers are there;  Billy the chip, Old Ron and Miss Davis.  For the rest of that day Floss waited for the chance to tell her dad she couldn't stay seeing him at the week-ends but she wasn't willing to spoil his effort into her party and his fun either. Floss has to decide between her mum or her dad which family will she choose in this impossible decision...

The Lottie Project

Do you know which one is me?

Hi! My name is Charlie.  I am going to tell you about my  horrible school.  I hate school. All you do is sit there and listen to the teachers go on and on and on, but just until you listen to them. I absolutely hate history because all you do is get given projects and essays to do ever lesson and to hand in the next lesson which is in 2 days.  Bye the way  I am the most popular person  in the whole school because everybody wants to be with me but I only choose the second popular people to sit next to me at lunch,  partners in P.E,  and to hang around with me and to sit next to me in class.  But the geek's are the ones I HAVE to hang around to get a good grade of course I wouldn't do it myself because I will have no time left to be popular would I.

So today we were given a project about the Victorian times. Do you know anything about the Victorian times ?  Could you do my project or not ? Are you a geek or do I have to find somebody else ?

Pearl and Jodie are sisters but are the best of friends.  At their usual school (Moorcroft) Jodie bunks off with her friends.  Their mum and dad decide she needs to be taught properly so they all go to boarding school at Melchester college. Pearl used to get terribly teased but when she arrives at Melchester college the first friend she makes is a boy called Harley.  When they arrive it is the summer holidays so the only children there already are Zeph, Dan, Sakura and Harley. Zeph, Dan and Sakura are little and Jodie and Pearl don't know why they have to stay for the summer but Harley can't stand  his parents so that explains him staying there.  Pearl used to get terribly teased but in Melchester college she has lots of friends.  Jodie's the one who doesn't fit in.  Pearl doesn't need Jodie any longer but Jodie needs her.  But when a terrible thing happens on bonfire night Pearl realises just how much she needs her sister.

Dustbin Baby

This book made me cry at some points but at the end it made my cry with joy.  The dustbin baby (April) likes making up stories about her past but knows some parts are true.  For some reason she can remember the worst parts more vividly than the rest.  She can remember being taken from the dustbin in strong but gentle hands and being held close to some-one's chest.  April hates thinking back to the worst part (where her foster mum dies) but wants to make herself remember.  Eventually she decides to find all the people from her past like going to Partricia Williams' house and to the greenwood cemetery to find her foster mum.  She has done so much in her past even nearly killing someone (for a good reason though).  The bit at the end is where she gets reunited with Frankie ( the person who took her out the bin) because he leaves his  mobile number on the bin.  April ended up living with a teacher! She had two friends with down syndrome Poppy and Esme.  One of the times April was extremely naughty was when she lived in a children's home with a big girl called Gina.  Gina was very naughty but liked April and made her come out and rob homes nearby but once they got caught with 100 pounds and a golden necklace.
I would recommend this book to 10-15 year olds as it has sad and panicking points.

My Sister Jodie

This book is about two sisters Pearl and Jodie.  Pearl is anxious and shy and always comes top in class.
In Pearl ’ s old school she used  to get teased because she was the teacher’s pet.
Jodie is not anything like her fabulous sister brash and crazy and never even tries to be the best.
When their parents got a new job at posh Melchester College the sisters were SUDDENLY thrust into a new life.
Pearl has made a lot of new friends.  But  Jodie just mucks about. Once when Jodie’ s class was meant to be writing about a poem she wrote about nonsense.

The Suitcase Kid

Her family always lived at  Mulberry Cottage.  She has a Sylvania rabbit as her mascot to get through her decisions on who she should live with, her mum or her dad.

I think she should live with them both and they should just all get on with each other and live back in the old house at Mulberry cottage.  But  now her mum lives with who she calls Bill the Baboon and his kids, and her dad lives with selfish Carrie and her twins.

Where does she live?  She started thinking about if she should actually be living in a house maybe she would be better off out in the streets sleeping on her rusty smelly old suitcase.

Lily Alone

I have just started to read 'Lily Alone' and I can't wait to finish it. Lily wishes she really was home alone. Her mum goes on holiday leaving Lily to mind her sisters Bliss and Pixie and brother Baxter. They don't go to school, get locked out the house and end up living in a hollow tree in the park! I'll let you know what I think at the end of the book.

The Dare Game

Characters:

  • Tracy Beaker  ( the main character)
  • Cam (Tracy's foster mum)
  • Alexander (Tracy's friend at her house when she bunks off school)
  • Football  (Tracy's other friend at her house when she bunks off school)
  • Tracy's mum
  • Roxanne
Tracy is an eleven year old girl who was in a children's home (they all called it the dumping ground) until Cam came to talk about an article about children in care.  Cam quite liked Tracy (even though she's not very well behaved at all!) and Tracy liked Cam and eventually Cam decided to foster her.  Tracy doesn't like her new school because there's a girl called Roxanne who started up a dare game with Tracy.  Roxanne blamed all the dares on Tracy so Tracy decides to bunk off and just not bother going.  She meets up with Alexander who gets teased at school and Football who was excluded.  Tracy's mum eventually sees Tracy and promises that they will live together soon, but Cam's not so sure.  Will Tracy ever live with her real mum or will she go on living with Cam...

Starring Tracy Beaker,by Jaqueline Wilson

This book is about a girl called Tracy Beaker. Tracy is a bit of a tomboy, she lives in a children's home because her mum is a filmstar in Hollywood.Tracy is taking part in a play at school and she really wants her mum to come and watch her perform. Not many of the other characters in the story like Tracy because she's a bit feisty, but only when she feels the need to fight back.
Peter is Tracy's best friend, he lives in the home too and they go to school together.Iwould definitely recommend this book to nine year old girls.I don't think it would appeal to boys because it's not an exciting  adventure, it's a story about a girl's daily life.
Tracy is very good at acting her part in the play, but does her mum come to watch ? Read the book to find out.

Lily Alone

Characters:
  • Lily
  • Bliss
  • Pixie
  • Baxter
  • Lily's mum
  • Old Kath
  • Gordon
  • Mikey
Problem:

Lily's mum goes on holiday with Gordon and leaves Lily with the twins ( Bliss and Baxter) and Pixie, but she expects the twins dad to look after them.

Lily is an eleven year old girl who has always dreamed of living alone.  When Lily's mum goes on holiday with her new boyfriend Gordon she left a message on Mikey's (Baxter and Bliss's dad) phone expecting him to come as soon as he got it.  But unfortunately Mikey was in Glasgow so he couldn't make it! Of course Lily's mum had gone by now so Lily was left to look after the six year old Bliss and Baxter and the four year old Pixie by herself!

There is a park that they have always wanted to go to that they can see from their flats. Finding the way through town to the park was a great difficulty for Lily especially as Pixie had insisted on taking the teddies and teapots along too.  She also had to lug Pixie along because she refused to walk.  That time when they visited the park they found their way out easily enough, but the next time they go there Pixie runs of along the hillside so they all follow her and find themselves lost.  They spend most of that long hard time living in a tree trunk.  Will they ever find their way out? And if they do will their mum come back?

Jacqueline Wilson has a website where she writes about all her books.

Bad Girls!

Mandy is always getting bullied by Kim, Melanie and Sarah so now she doesn't have a friend in the world. Until a girl that lived next door named Tanya came along and stood up to Kim. Mandy was amazed that someone could stand up to Kim like that so soon they became the best of friends. Every thing was perfect that was when Mandy found that Tanya was a criminal pulling things of the shelf and putting them in her pockets which eventually leads to prison.

I would recommend this book for nine and ten years old.

Jacqueline Wilson's Jacky Daydream

Jacky Daydream

Interestingly, this book is an autobiography of Jacqueline's childhood, she was a young girl in the early 19th century and now she is an old lady.

Her family were extremely poor and she lived with her parents in a flat above a shop. In those days public transport like buses, trains and subways were smelly, crammed and limited for people to use.

Generally most people did not travel very much or long distances because it was very expensive and uncomfortable.

This book is excellent because in different parts of her life she does funny things, like the time she crawls into the garden and starts to pull the plants out.

I enjoy reading Jacqueline Wilson's books because she is a very inventive and creative author and her stories are always very engaging.

Who would enjoy this book ?

This book is for anyone aged between 9 and 10 years and would enjoy comedy fictions, and can read long books

Candy Floss

This story is about a girl named Flora (who everyone calls Floss) who has to decide between moving with her mum Steve and Tiger to Australia or staying with her dad.  Will she make the right choice...

Flora chose her dad because she decided he needed her more.  Her dads cafe is in a spot of trouble with money and will have to close down soon. Flora and her dad are being brave with the whole situation though.  Her dad Charlie suggests that she flies to Australia to live with her mum but she stays with her dad anyway.  Flora finds a little cat she calls Lucky but will Lucky bring them luck or not?

Will Flora make up with her friend Rhiannon or will she continue being friends with Susan?  Will Flora and her dad find a home after leaving the cafe ( which is connected to a flat)?  Will Flora ever fly to Australia to live with her mum?

Vicky Angel

I would recommend this book to people who don't mind sad stories, because at the beginning Vicky gets run over by a car and becomes a ghost.  Her best friend Jade and her mum are the only people who can see her so they look like their talking to thin air.  My favourite bit is where Vicky takes Jade away from school to London!  Jade doesn't get told off though because all the teachers feel sorry for her; so do her mum and dad!  Vicky enjoys soaring high above the clouds and looking down at the black dots of people. When Vicky first got run over Jade thought it was her fault for not signing up for the fun run club Vicky wanted  to do.

Jade is so lonely without Vicky by her side the whole time.  When Jade first hears Vicky's voice she thinks she's dreaming because it doesn't seem real.  My heart started beating so quickly when I read the part about Vicky going to hospital because I didn't know what would happen. In this story Jacqueline Wilson makes you feel like you're stood watching it all happen.  Vicky doesn't go straight to being an angel she starts as a ghost then grows wings and becomes an angel.  Vicky treats going to heaven as a holiday not a place to spend her after-life in.  Jade wakes up one morning and Vicky's not there waiting by her bed, she starts to worry then. The same thing went through her mind the whole day "Has Vicky gone to heaven without warning me!".  But luckily the next day Vicky returns and Jade hugs her but she can't feel a thing!

Jade has no other friends, so before Vicky came back as a ghost at school she had nothing to do.  My favourite character is Vicky because she is so lively and adventurous.  Jacqueline Wilson made this book like Jade's diary so she told you how it feels to be going through the pain of having only a ghost as a friend.  She also tells you all the ups and downs of her life even before Vicky died.  James ( a boy in their class) starts being so kind to Jade even though he never used to talk to her and Vicky at all only mumble " Fun run clubs make me so tired" but Vicky would never listen anyway.
