Robin of Sherwood

This book full of action and tells an exciting story of a little boy that found a skeleton with an arrow tip and an old bow, which leads the boy in an extraordinary dream of medieval times, with Robin Hood. An amazing book written by Michael Morpogo, this book is a new version of the old Robin Hood. It is a book that takes you with it after every word you read. I would recommend this book because it is an amusing and inspiring book. This book is ideal for readers of ages 7 to 12.

Miguel Betran-Menz

Bad Girls!

Mandy is always getting bullied by Kim, Melanie and Sarah so now she doesn't have a friend in the world. Until a girl that lived next door named Tanya came along and stood up to Kim. Mandy was amazed that someone could stand up to Kim like that so soon they became the best of friends. Every thing was perfect that was when Mandy found that Tanya was a criminal pulling things of the shelf and putting them in her pockets which eventually leads to prison.

I would recommend this book for nine and ten years old.

The Alex Rider Series

Alex Rider....the teenage spy, is back and this time there are no limits....

These are the best books ever!!! I would recommend these books nine and up, yes even if you are 74 (like my grandad). They are the most exciting books ever.  He is like a young James Bond (minus the girlfriends). I feel like I am in the book with him every time I read it. I have read six out of the nine books in the series. I love the way Anthony Horowitz leaves the end of Scorpia at a cliff hanger and some of the chapters, so you can't put the book down. If you want to know Alex Rider's story then pick up Stormbreaker and read.

No Breathing in Class

Thanks to Jack for bringing this book in today. It's a book of fantastic poems by Michael Rosen. The illustrations, by Korky Paul, are great too.

Here's the poem Strict in the way Michael Rosen tells it:

STRICT

We had a teacher who was so strict,
you weren't allowed to breathe in her lessons.
She used to stand at the front going, "NO BREATHING!"
And you had the whole morning to get through.
*aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh* *pah*
The weak ones just used to keel over and die.
You'd hear them going down behind you. *ker-poom* *ker-poom* *ker-poom*
And there was always a whiny kid going, "Miss! Can I go out and do some breathing?"
And she'd say, "No! You've got all playtime to do it in!"
"Oh, go on Miss, oh, go on!"

Do you know at the beginning of the week there were forty-eight kids in my class.

At the end of the week there were only five of them left.
Yeah.
Do you know at the end of the day you'd be stepping over kids just to get out the room.
Oh no! There's Melanie. That's a shame, she was really nice.
There's Dave. Eheheh. Hard luck, Dave! Always knew you were a bit weak.

Do you know, people say to me, if that's true, how come you're here to tell the tale?

Fair enough, and I'll tell you.
It's because, when I was at school, we used to sit at desks.
We didn't sit 'round tables like you do now.
We used to sit at desks, with lids.
And some of us figured out, what you had to do was snatch a quick breath under the desk lid when she wasn't looking.

So once more, from the beginning.

"NO BREATHING!"
*aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh* *pah*
The weak ones: *ker-poom* *ker-poom* *ker-poom*
The whiny ones: "Miss! Can I go out and do some breathing?
"No! You've got all playtime to do it in!"
"Oh, go on Miss, oh, go on!"
Us lot: *PAH* *gasp gasp gasp* *ptoom*
Ah! That was the mistake! Slamming the desk lid down!
If you made a noise with the desk lid, it was OUT!
School PRISON!
There was a school prison underneath the school hall where they used to string you up from the wallbars.
*sqfluut*
"Miss! I've been up here for three weeks... and there's rats!
And they're nibbling my toenails!"

So I figured it out.

What you had to do was put your thumb 'round the edge of the desk lid so when it went down it didn't make any noise at all.

Once more, from the beginning.

"NO BREATHING!"
*aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh* *pah*
The weak ones: *ker-poom* *ker-poom* *ker-poom*
The whiny ones: "Miss! Can I go out and do some breathing?"
"No! You've got all playtime to do it in!"
"Oh, go on Miss, oh, go on!"
These other kids: *PAH* *gasp gasp* *ptoom*
OUT! School PRISON! *sqfluut*
"Miss! I've been up here for three weeks and there's... rats!
And they're nibbling... my toenails! Miss!"
Me: Thumb 'round the edge of the desk.
*PAH* *gasp gasp gasp*
No noise at all.
SURVIVAL!

Here's Michael Rosen telling it:

The Spy Dog Series

I love the Spy Dog books because they are really adventurous. As I have the series at home I started to read them and they intrigued me into reading all the books. Spy Dog books are the best!

Spy Dog
The family go to a vet to look for a dog. Lara the dog likes them and he wants to be with them. So he has a plan, his plan is to get the family to like him. Plan A is to do things like no other dog can do, he gets noticed but it doesn't  work. Plan B is to do loads of flips  and tricks but that doesn't work either. Plan C is to do a really cool whistle and that definitely works. I hope that they will have loads of adventures!

Spy Dog 2
In this book, the family visit the beach and there is this criminal who tries to steel dogs away from the island they are visiting,  but Lara finds out about it. This was a great book as I think Lara is a dog from the movie 007. I would like to have him as a pet. Plus at the end of the series you would like to have him as a pet as well.

Spy Dog unleashed
Spy Dog is involved in another mystery about a robber who tries to steel the Millennium diamond from a  museum. It is up to Lara to stop him . Lara puts the robber back into jail but he escapes again. I think anyone reading  this book review will love this book. Lara will stop him!!

Spy  Dog Super brain
A gang of villainous teachers  want to make their school year the best of the best . They are making a secretive formula. The final ingredient is the brain of a school child. They will stop at nothing even banning playtime .
I think Lara will not let them complete their plot.

Spy Dog Rocket Rider
Lara has retired from the secret service but can she still sniff out the danger? This team of people want to cause trouble in space. Lara can never let  a mission go unsolved. Lara had to do something to stop their evil plot from working but Lara and his Long Lost Dad named Leo help him complete this mission. At the end, Lara has lots of puppies and Leo comes out of the  vet.

Lara:
  • Lara stands for Licensed Assault Rescue Animal,
  • She water skies,
  •  She plays cricket,
  • She catches robbers on the run,
  • She drives cars,
  • She`s a PlayStation champion,
  • She`s got a black belt in karate,
  • She`s agent GM451 or Lara to you,
  •  Once a Spy Dog always a Spy Dog,
  • Goal keeping Legend,
  •  Language skills including Advanced Cat and Basic Dolphin,
  • Ace surfer,
  • Champion Juggler,
  • Whistling,
  • Computer skills,
  • Unarmed combat,
  • Five Languages.
  • PlayStation grandmaster,
  • and many others
  • Never mind James Bond, Lara, The world`s one and only Spy Dog, is back,
  • Forget 007, it`s time to meet GM451: a Spy Dog the first of her kind.
I love Spy Dog. He is amazing!

I would recommend this series  to People in Year 5 to Year 6 in the International School Of Toulouse, France.

Stormbreaker

Stormbreaker is about when Alex Rider (a 14 year old boy) learns that the new
laptops (the stormbreakers) that are being sent to schools all over the country  have viruses that will be let out when the Governor presses a button.

I recommend this book to people who like adventure and excitement because this book has plenty of it.

What I really like about this book is that at first Alex didn't know that his uncle was a spy at all; he thought that he was a banker!

The lion the witch and the wardrobe

the book

the film
This book is about three children: Susan, Peter, Edmund and, Lucy and their adventures in Narnia.

I recommend this book to people who like adventure. I really liked it and I'm sure other people will too.

This book is the second book in a series called
The Chronicles of Narnia and also a film as well.

Mr Stink

This book is about a girl who has a very boring life, to begin with. She is 11 years old and she looks more like a nine year old.
Her name is Chloe and  she is not very clever  and for that reason she meets Mr Stink who is a tramp.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy
and humour and if you've read Rohld Dahl's books, well, David Walliams is just  like a modern-day Rohld Dahl.

Chloe's sister Annabelle is so clever and never has a second to stop and take a deep breath because she has all these clubs  to go to, but I can't tell you about them  because you can read it for your self.
Mr Stink  has a dog but he is very old so Mr Stink tries to look after him  ( oh sorry the dog is a girl how could I forget!) but as he is a tramp he has no money so it is quite hard to keep her with him.
As well as poor Chloe not being very clever, she also gets picked on by Rosamund the mean girl at school.  There are lots of things that Rosamund and Chloe don't like about each other and Rosamund especially hates Chloes friendship with Mr Stink.

I get the impression that Rosamund is jealous because she says "Who is this? Your new boyfriend?"  But don't tell her I said that or she will get mad at me! Chloe hates Rosamund because she put... (ok I have told you too much about the story so I will tell you more about Mr Stink).

Mr Stink smells and he has not had a bath for ages and so does his dog well I know it is rude to say about ladies but ooh she smells, well that's what Chloe says anyway.  He sleeps on a bench in the park in the same old smelly hard clothes all the time.

I read this book because I heard that it was a good book - and it is!  If you read it you can imagine that you are actually there watching it all happen under your nose, just let the words wash around you like music - I'm sure that you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Skulduggery Pleasant By Derek Landy

Let me introduce you to Skulduggery Pleasant: detective, magician, warrior. Oh yes, and a skeleton!

This book has lots of murder in it and crime for Skulduggery Pleasant to solve. Of course people get hurt and die, but it always has a good end for Skulduggery Pleasant! But it will not end good for him forever!

Reading this story is really fun. Some parts are boring but then somebody gets murdered, and then you would want to keep reading because you would want to find out who murdered that person!
The story made me feel as if I was standing right next to Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain (Skulduggery Pleasant's partner!) I really like the way Derek Landy builds the suspense, which was making me read on and on. I didn't want to put down the book because it was so interesting.

Once I start reading Skulduggery Pleasant everything around me goes blank, sometimes I'm so focused on the story that I don't even notice that I already pasted three chapters!

I recommend this book for children 9-12 and, for those who love crime, mystery and adventure books.
And don't expect that Skulduggery Pleasant is so good and wins every battle against his enemies!!

Heartland healing horses, healing hearts tomorrows promise

Heartland is a horse farm nested in the hills of virginia, but it's much more than that.  Heartland is a place like no other - a place where frightened and abused horses learn to trust again.

when amy meets Daniel, she is stunned.  She can't figure out how horse can so cold to everyone else.  Butas Amy gets to know Daniel, she begins to understand him.  She respects that he won't give in to the spectacle of the show circuit - and that he doesn't care what others say about his horse   Daniel rides Amber like it's the two of them against the world.  Amy knows they could be the best one day - but how far will Daniel go to win?

Secret Seven

Let me introduce you to the Secret Seven. There are three girls and four boys (five because of Scamper the dog). At the moment in the book it is just a bit after Christmas. This is their first meeting in a long time.Today when I was reading they found there first mystery for a longtime.
The gang have discovered from Jack that at the house they found near Peter and Pam's house its an really old man living at the house he does not like kids or dogs including Scamper the spaniel.Jack found the mystery when he was looking for his badge in the night suddenly he saw a car with some kind of trailer attached to it with something in it. As in the picture above Jack has to hide behind a bush so he does not get in to trouble. The next morning the gang already is trying to slove this problem.

The Land of Stories

The Land of Stories The Wishing Spell

This story is about Alex and Conner Bailey. They drop into a book of magic and adventure. How can they save themselves?  Hot behind them the evil queen follows them.Conner was as always dreaming away and before you new it he was asleep.  Then miss Green spoke up and said "MR;BAILEY how dare you sleep in my class".  When they got home to their suprise was grandma, Alex slowley but bravley walked up to her.  " oh la la you starteled me, come on then let's go inside.  And she put her arm around Alex and frog marched her inside.

The reason I really enjoiyed this book is because Grandma gives them a book that is filed with magic and love.  And one day after school Alex SUDDENLY fell into the book.  they have to find five items so the fairygodmother can bring them back to the normal world.  But guess what the twins Grandmother is the fairygodmother.  That meens the twins Dad was born from the Land of Stories.

You're a bad man, Mr Gum!

Mr Gum

Mr Gum is not just one book, but it is a whole series of eight books and other special editions.

This book is hilarious because Mr Gum manages to attain him self in to trouble. There is a girl called Polly who has a friend which is a dog called Jake. Polly is a very obedient girl but Mr.Gum is an abominable man. Mr.Gum has an ability to cause a fight or a dangerous expedition of courage and at the same time fear takes over the battle.

Andy Stanton has many achievements, but his biggest is the Roald Dahl funny prize. People often say he is the Roald Dahl of this century but he is also in the same percentage of books sold all around the world as Michael Morpurgo.
You're a Bad Man, Mr. Gum!

The Return Of the Killer Cat

Yes he is back with even more trouble than before yes he is getting stuck up trees and getting mistaken from abilities.   It's like never before the most troubled book of all times .  Yes it is the most terrific cat in the world  with the most biggest brain. It's killer cat.

Tuffy can't wait for Ellie and the family go on holiday   He and the gang plan to ignore the grumpy new cat-sitter,and run wild all night.  But could that furry bundle, suddenly flying through the air, put a stop to all the fun.

I would recommend this to people that like to read infectiously funny and highly readable. Age wise 8-10.

The Horrible Histories series . Amandine PRIVE

The Horrible Histories

I would recommend these books for children over the age of 7 because sometimes they are a bit gruesome and horrid, but first I am going to mention some of the reasons why I like reading them .

I enjoy the pictures and the dialogues, they are funny and they help you to understand the writing in the passage on each page. Also the series talks about very important historical facts, for example in:

- The Rotten Romans : They enjoyed going to war. Each time they found someone who was an enemy, they wanted to start a war with them. Through gaining territories and properties they became stronger and richer and managed to build a bigger Empire.

- Vile Victorians :
They were called the Victorians because they are named after Victoria who was queen of England from 1837 to 1901. The Vile Victorians put in place good things like: improved medicine, toilets and plumbing, banned women and children from working in mines, free education…
The Vile Victorians did wrong things too!
They conquered many parts of the world to increase Britain's wealth. There was a lot of killing going on in various wars, and it is very distracting, I mean for me the pictures are very distracting. Although the Victorians introduced free education by 1891 for most of the Queen Victoria's reign many children did difficult and dangerous jobs.

So I have told you about these books so I think I have finished!

No Way Back

Valerie Wilding's My story: No way back

No way back is about a girl called Mary who gets transported. Being transported was a punishment for murderers; it was used a long time ago. However, Mary was not a murderer, she had only stolen something. The most common place to be sent was New South Wales. At the time people thought that New South Wales was full of:

  • tigers
  • lions
  • bears
and giant hopping things - what are they?

I loved this book because it's a mixture of  happiness, sadness and adventure.
I think that this is a book that  9+ readers would like because it is very sad but it is also very interesting.
Who knows - it might have happened to someone in your past!...

TORO! TORO!

The characters in this book are called Antonito and  Maria there is also Antonito's parents. This book takes place in Spain during the civil war of Spain. This book is sad. A lot people die. The parents of Antonito die, but Antonito still has his uncle.

The little boy has a bull called Paco.

I would recommend this book for 8-11.

Jacqueline Wilson's Jacky Daydream

Jacky Daydream

Interestingly, this book is an autobiography of Jacqueline's childhood, she was a young girl in the early 19th century and now she is an old lady.

Her family were extremely poor and she lived with her parents in a flat above a shop. In those days public transport like buses, trains and subways were smelly, crammed and limited for people to use.

Generally most people did not travel very much or long distances because it was very expensive and uncomfortable.

This book is excellent because in different parts of her life she does funny things, like the time she crawls into the garden and starts to pull the plants out.

I enjoy reading Jacqueline Wilson's books because she is a very inventive and creative author and her stories are always very engaging.

Who would enjoy this book ?

This book is for anyone aged between 9 and 10 years and would enjoy comedy fictions, and can read long books

Wartman by Michael Morpurgo

This story is very short but it was still fantastic.

I found the book in the library it was a Michael Morpurgo book that I had never herd of.  It is about a boy called Billy Who every one called Dilly.  Dilly gets a wart on his knee. He starts to put a plaster on the wart so no one at his school could see it .  It was working until a girl called trips him up and the plaster comes of! Every one sees the wart, then teacher takes him in and says that she had a wart and see knows someone who can cure them.  But will the wart clear or not?

This book would be for girls and boys who are 5 to 10  years old.  It was a really good book!

The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips by Michael Morpurgo

This book is a great book.

The book is about a girl called Lily  and a cat called Adolphus Tips.  It starts in a farm were everything is normal,  but there is a meeting at church and they have to move out  because the army have to use the village for practicing.  There is a boy called Barry who has no place to go because the person who was looking after him is going back to Germany because she is German.    So they decide to let him live with them.  The boy is called Barry. They move in to her Uncles house.  The Uncle is called George.  Lily meets a solder who was very friendly to Lily.  He is called Adolphus T!  But then Lily cat goes missing in the area that they are not allowed in. She asks the soldier to go look for her cat. But will they find her cat?

I would say this book is for boys and girls who are 6 to 11.  There are ups and downs in the story.  It is one of the best books I have ever read!

Jacky Daydream

Introduction

Jacky day dream is a fantastic novel by Jacqueline Wilson about here entire life from the small age of 0 wow! she has a good memory

Jacqueline Wilson is such a creative writer about descriptions of characters setting etc. In fact all the of the things you have to have in a story all of them she's got ten out of ten from perspective, she talks about here first ever novel The Maggots which I think looked very intriguing from my  view.

I would Recommend this book

I would recommend this book to 8-11 years old people enjoy the mixture of sadness (rarely) and fun!

I was a Rat

Let me introduce you to a boy called Roger he is a very poor boy and he has no  mother or father. We think he lives in a seller all on his own with no one to speak with, no one to be with he was all anlone. He had no manners because in his early life he never learnt anything from his parents, for his life in the future. He was called a rat boy by the people in his villige. He eats very weird stuff like pencils because he has never eaten real food before. But he does get very well looked after now by his new parents and gets fed real food. Some times the book turns into a mystery. He has a very nasty Doctor who takes him away from his home which is one of the mysteries for his new Mum and Dad.

In the end it turned out happy and he had a normal life and he went to school but he still ate all of the pencils and he got very told off he had to go to the head teacher and Roger got a whipping with a cane and he had a red mark down his back. He hated school from then on because he always got told off because he did no work, because he didn't know how to so he got put down to year 1 and he is 7 or 8 years old. He never wanted to come back to school ever again. Even though he did not want to he gave it one last go and he was actually learning and he started to like school but of course he still ate pencils. Luckily his new teacher is a lot kinder and softer.

Bat Pat the Golden Tooth Pirate

Bat Pat is a detective that solves cases. He is a very curious bat. His friends are: Martin, 10 years old, Leo, 9 years old and Rebecca, 8 years old. The three Children are brothers. I am going to tell about  the story.
One day there was a bat with his human friends, and they read about an island and they wanted to go so they decided to go they went to a cave bat pat found some of his bat friends, the friends guide them to an old pirate ship there were ghosts pirates! so they run away. They never told anyone.

Monster Blood ll / R.L. Stine

I like the idea of the author turning a hamster called Cuddles, ten times its normal size. With  massive teeth and claws its cage got broken by its size and it got as big as the school, until someone drank monster blood and they had a war...

Goosebumps is normally scary but this one isn't.  I recommend it for ages 5 - 8 years. I've read other Goosebumps books and they are usually good.

Candy Floss

This story is about a girl named Flora (who everyone calls Floss) who has to decide between moving with her mum Steve and Tiger to Australia or staying with her dad.  Will she make the right choice...

Flora chose her dad because she decided he needed her more.  Her dads cafe is in a spot of trouble with money and will have to close down soon. Flora and her dad are being brave with the whole situation though.  Her dad Charlie suggests that she flies to Australia to live with her mum but she stays with her dad anyway.  Flora finds a little cat she calls Lucky but will Lucky bring them luck or not?

Will Flora make up with her friend Rhiannon or will she continue being friends with Susan?  Will Flora and her dad find a home after leaving the cafe ( which is connected to a flat)?  Will Flora ever fly to Australia to live with her mum?

Vicky Angel

I would recommend this book to people who don't mind sad stories, because at the beginning Vicky gets run over by a car and becomes a ghost.  Her best friend Jade and her mum are the only people who can see her so they look like their talking to thin air.  My favourite bit is where Vicky takes Jade away from school to London!  Jade doesn't get told off though because all the teachers feel sorry for her; so do her mum and dad!  Vicky enjoys soaring high above the clouds and looking down at the black dots of people. When Vicky first got run over Jade thought it was her fault for not signing up for the fun run club Vicky wanted  to do.

Jade is so lonely without Vicky by her side the whole time.  When Jade first hears Vicky's voice she thinks she's dreaming because it doesn't seem real.  My heart started beating so quickly when I read the part about Vicky going to hospital because I didn't know what would happen. In this story Jacqueline Wilson makes you feel like you're stood watching it all happen.  Vicky doesn't go straight to being an angel she starts as a ghost then grows wings and becomes an angel.  Vicky treats going to heaven as a holiday not a place to spend her after-life in.  Jade wakes up one morning and Vicky's not there waiting by her bed, she starts to worry then. The same thing went through her mind the whole day "Has Vicky gone to heaven without warning me!".  But luckily the next day Vicky returns and Jade hugs her but she can't feel a thing!

Jade has no other friends, so before Vicky came back as a ghost at school she had nothing to do.  My favourite character is Vicky because she is so lively and adventurous.  Jacqueline Wilson made this book like Jade's diary so she told you how it feels to be going through the pain of having only a ghost as a friend.  She also tells you all the ups and downs of her life even before Vicky died.  James ( a boy in their class) starts being so kind to Jade even though he never used to talk to her and Vicky at all only mumble " Fun run clubs make me so tired" but Vicky would never listen anyway.

Brains, Bodies, Guts, and stuff

The contents

This is a fantastic non-fiction comedy book where there are two people: one's a doctor and one's a normal civilian. The civilian one's to know answers to how much your bladder can take, what's the most fart food and all sorts of weird yet true facts.  They even talk about if you held your urine for so long would you explode or how long would you exactly survive if you were skinny or fat without food,  and what's special for when your heart stops.

 I Would recommend this Book

I would recommend this book to 8-12 year old students. This sort of book is a mixture of non fiction, comedy, and facts (like horrible histories but a bit more gruesome!)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie is a poor boy. He lives on the edge of town and this town is no ordinary town: this town has Mr. Wonka' s chocolate factory, the greatest chocolate factory in the world. This is the start of Charlie and the Chocolate  Factory. Mr. Willy Wonka is giving out golden tickets. Will Charlie get his dream?

Charlie's wish

Charlie only gets one Wonka bar a year but not this year he gets three. Only he and Grampa Joe know. The  rest of the family only think he has had two. Sneaky Charlie. Does Charlie get  a Golden ticket?  Do you have a golden ticket?

I would recomed this book to Roald Dahl readers ( Roald Dahl is not alive though).

Silverfin Comic from the Young Bond series

This comic is one of the best I have ever read! It's got action, violence, it puts a lot of suspense on you.

comic cover
If you don't like comics you could read the story. This book starts off in 1930 when James Bond was a teenager. The first page was of a person fishing and is killed by some eels. He was on the train going to Eton College where he met a bully. That bully is one of the main characters in the comic and story. The bully is called George Hellebore. He meets a friend who the son of an Indian Maharajah. At the school he signs up for a triathlon. When he was training George Hellebore came along and tried to drown James! But James pulled him into the water.

book cover
I was sure George Hellebore was going to get revenge. The first event was shooting in which he came last! The second event was swimming, in which James came second. Then the last race was the marathon which is the most interesting because George Hellebore took a short cut and James found him and punched him! Will they solve the mystery about the eels and the man...?

The Haunted School (Dream)

Ellie and Jessica came in today with a book that they themselves have written. It's a bit of a horror story. First of all there was something strange about Amandine. Then the Harry noticed that Mr Gregg had a very green tooth. He was a vampire!

The story is about their battle to overcome the vampire-teacher. It's all very spooky. At the end they appear to have won the battle. But there is a strange roar.

Of course, it's ridiculous that a teacher could turn so nasty.

Billy the Kid by Michael Morpurgo

This book has been a really good read. I couldn't put it down!

It is about a kid called Billy who loves playing football and plays for Chelsea!  Then brother goes off to the war and gets killed! So Billy becomes a doctor in the army and gets shipped off to Italy where the war is.  He gets captured.  At the prison there was a guard who was very friendly and they organised a massive football cup. After that the Italians came friends let then go.  But where will they go?

This book has ups and downs. I would recommend this book for people who like football and war or if you like Cool. The age to read it would be 7 years to 11 years.

I loved it!
